Nicholas Salazar Aguirre (October 27, 1958 - July 29, 1984) was an American stock car racing driver. He was known primarily for winning 37 races in the NASCAR Cup Series since his debut in 1979, including the 1982 Winston 500. Despite his short career, Aguirre had an impressive track record which he maintained until his death in 1984.

Aguirre was born on October 27, 1958, in San Jacinto, California. Both of his parents were of Hispanic heritage, and he was raised primarly by his mother, who was never married. He had two younger brothers and one younger sister.^[1]

Despite an estranged relationship with his father, Aguirre affirmed that his love for cars was sparked when he was gifted a 1969 Camaro by him, stating, "That was the only good thing the old man ever did for me".^[1]

At age 16, he dropped out of high-school to work full time at an auto shop, helping provide for his family.

In 1979, at age 21, Aguirre made his debut as a professional racer on the Winston Western 500^[2], at the Riverside International Raceway. He finished in 17th place. On the following year, he won NASCAR Rookie of the Year award.

It wouldn't be until 1982 that he would celebrate his first big achievement at a prestige race, getting the 1st place at the Winston 500. On that same year, he won pole position at the Daytona 500 event.^[2]

In July 29, at the 1984 Talladega 500 event, Aguirre was the victim of a fatal accident on the track. After an unusual slow start, he gradually gained on the other racers and soon became locked with Logan Foster in a battle for the lead. He lost control of the car during a turn, which was sent flying before crashing into the the inside wall, flipping upside down. Aguirre died as the result of a fatal neck injury caused by the crash.^[3]

At the time, paramedics rushed to the scene to remove Aguirre's body from the wreckage, but upon checking for a pulse they found none. Aguirre's was then rushed to the nearest hospital, which was in Talladega, on which he was declared dead by the doctors. However, it is understood that he died at the Talladega Superspeedway, Lincoln.

Aguirre's final resting place is the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.^[4]
