Darhel Valkanir of Naialän

Darhel was a dagrin who lived during the Discovery Era. He was born in Naialän, a small village in Ishverion, in the year 3157 DE. He was the son of simple farmers, but went on to become a respected knight.

History

Darhel became a soldier at age 18 to help his family. Both of his parents were simple farmers, and money was tight. They lived in a small village, and cultivating food was increasingly harder with the harsh weather. That's when the King sent a message across the entire Ishverian kingdom, looking for strong men to join the army in Eveshla, the capital of Ishverion. Those who succeeded would be paid greatly. Darhel then made up his mind, and started to serve his kingdom as a soldier. He would always send part of the money he earned to his family back home.

As time went on, Darhel would become more and more skilled in the battlefield. Eventually, his adventures earned him the title of general at age 26, and he settled in the position with minimal problems. He was good at leading his men into battle, and the alliances he forged with his fellow soldiers are still as strong as iron. The next year, when he was 27, he was sent on a particularly important mission, and one that left him with his most disturbing scar.

The enemy had devised explosive attacks, and it was thanks to Darhel's leadership that they were able to defeat them. He had his friend Hundarn to accompany him, but the man had become gravely injured. Darhel was willing to sacrifice himself to get his friend to safety, getting too close to one of the bombs the enemy had thrown at them. When the bomb exploded, it nearly took half his face with it. Despite that, he survived the attacks, and soon after he was summoned to the royal palace and officially knighted.

Personality

Darhel carries himself with a certain grace only reserved for nobility, even though he is of humble origins. He is mostly jaded by the world, and there seems to be very little that impresses him. He is loyal to his duty, and willing to do anything to fulfill his role. But that doesn't mean he'll blindly follow anyone like an obedient dog. He knows an inexperienced leader when he sees one, and the arrogance that follows. For that reason, he is as well suited to be a leader as he is a follower.

After seeing so much war during his days as both soldier and knight, he has become hardened and aloof. But he still looks for beauty in the world, lest he let himself go mad. He appreciates the little things; glory and wealth are of little value to him.

Relationships

Ever since his youth, Darhel has only been romantically attracted to other men. He doesn't mention it much, and that fact is only known to those who are closest to him. He is not married and does not have any children, and is not willing to reveal anything about his personal life to those he just met. He has taken lovers in the past before, although because of his lifestyle his relationships can be rather short lived.

One such relationship happened rather early in his life, with the son of a merchant he met when he was 19. His name was Eldrin, and they enjoyed a passionate relationship for a year, but it came to an end after a disagreement between the two.

His best friend is Hundarn, a knight commander in the royal army, and someone he's known since forever. They've been though a lot together, and their bond is harder to fracture than diamond.
